Wer, wenn ich schriee, hörte mich denn aus der Engel
Ordnungen? und gesetzt selbst, es nähme
einer mich plötzlich ans Herz: ich verginge von seinem
stärkeren Dasein. Denn das Schöne ist nichts
als des Schrecklichen Anfang, den wir noch grade ertragen,
und wir bewundern es so, weil es gelassen verschmäht,

On 6 August, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The three-metre-long bomb – codenamed ‘Little Boy’ – was 71 cm in diameter and contained more than 64 kilos of enriched uranium. ‘Little Boy’ detonated some 550 metres above the city. Eighty thousand people were killed instantly. At the epicentre of the blast, the heat was so intense that victims’ bodies evaporated. Only their shadows remained, burnt into the walls and pavements.
